A Sold-Out Celebration for the Arts

Apr 13, 2026

Theatre Under The Stars welcomed a full house of supporters on April 10 for its annual Leading Ladies Luncheon at Tony’s on Richmond Avenue! It was an inspiring afternoon dedicated to celebrating arts advocacy and investing in the future of musical theatre in Houston.

Now in its fifth consecutive sold-out year, the luncheon continues to grow as a beloved spring tradition. Under the leadership of event chair June Deadrick and a dedicated host committee, this year’s event raised nearly $140,000 in support of the mission of TUTS: to make high-quality musical theatre accessible to the entire community.

Honoring Leaders in Arts and Education

A highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of the Shirley Stein Outstanding Champion in the Arts and Education Award to Helen Shaffer, whose longstanding commitment to arts education and advocacy has made a meaningful impact across Houston.

TUTS also recognized two individuals whose work continues to strengthen the local arts ecosystem:

  • Dr. Bobby Linhart, Houston Christian High School, as Arts Educator of the Year
  • Meredith Alexander, Class Act Productions, as Community Volunteer of the Year

Together, these honorees reflect the dedication and passion that drive arts education and community engagement throughout the region.

A Celebration of Community and Impact

The luncheon program, emceed by Courtney Markowitz, highlighted the many artists, educators, and advocates who contribute to Houston’s vibrant cultural landscape.

Guests also enjoyed special musical performances by Abeer Siddiqui, Nathan Bryant, and Sophia Von Koschembahr, showcasing the exceptional talent fostered through TUTS Education programs.

The event brought together a distinguished group of community leaders, elected officials, and longtime supporters, all united by a shared belief in the transformative power of the arts.

Supporting the Next Generation

The Leading Ladies Luncheon was created to champion the TUTS education and community initiatives programs that provide access, training, and inspiration for students and audiences across Houston.

Founded in 2006 by Amy Pierce and Marsha Taylor, the Leading Ladies continue to play a vital role in advancing TUTS’ mission through fundraising, volunteerism, and advocacy for the next generation of artists and arts educators.

TUTS is deeply grateful to the sponsors and donors whose generosity made this year’s event possible and continues to sustain the organization’s work on stage, in classrooms, and throughout the community.
