Elite Training for Aspiring Musical Theatre Professionals

The HSMT Academy is Theatre Under The Stars’ premier audition-based training program for students serious about pursuing musical theatre. Academy students receive pre-professional training in voice, acting, and dance while gaining invaluable performance experience alongside peers who share their passion.

This program is designed for students preparing for college theatre programs, professional opportunities, or simply seeking the highest level of arts training available in Houston.

Highlights include:

When will the next auditions be held?
Auditions for the 2026–27 Academy season will be announced in late spring. Join the HSMT email list to receive the latest updates.
Can I audition even if I can’t attend in person?
Yes—while in-person auditions are recommended, video submissions are accepted. For context, the 2025 virtual deadline was August 17.
What audition materials are required?
New students must prepare a one-minute monologue, a 16-bar musical theatre song, and participate in a group dance (ballet, jazz, tap). Bring a headshot and resume.
Is there a music theory assessment?

Yes—new students and returning students seeking music placements are required to complete an online music theory test after applying.

What are the age requirements?
Applicants must be at least 12 years old by December 31 of the audition year. A gap year student who has recently graduated may also apply.
When will I be notified of the audition outcome?
Admission decisions are sent via email in early August following auditions.
What training does the Academy provide?
Academy students follow a 20-week conservatory-style program featuring training in acting, voice, ballet, jazz, tap, improvisation, scene study, audition prep, and music theory. Students also perform in community events and may be eligible for placement in TUTS mainstage productions.
Are scholarships available?

What’s the time commitment for Academy students?
Classes typically run Monday through Thursday evenings (5–9 p.m.) and Saturdays, with most courses meeting once a week during the academic school year. Students usually take 2 to 3 courses annually.
