TUTS Musical Theatre Academy offers Core Classes in Music, Dance and Acting for students ages 4 – 18 through the Humphreys School.
Core Classes are open to students regardless of experience level whether they’re brand new to musical theatre or have a little experience. Fall classes take place September 14 – December 12.
The deadline to register for Core Classes is Monday, September 7.
Core Classes
Music Foundations for the Stage: 3rd - 5th Grade
In this class, participants will explore the building blocks of music and how they bring powerful vocal performances to life on stage. Through hands-on learning, students will dive into basic harmony, introductory music theory, and key vocal techniques that strengthen tone, control, and confidence. Whether you’re new or building on experience, this course will help you better understand your voice and take the next exciting step in your musical theatre journey.
This class takes place on Saturdays from 9:30 – 10:30 AM at the Hobby Center campus.
Music Foundations for the Stage: 6th - 8th Grade

Music Theory Essentials I: 6th - 12th Grade
This course builds students’ skills in recognizing and applying essential music theory through the symbols and notation found in vocal scores and sheet music. Students will sharpen their sight-reading and ear training abilities, gaining the confidence and musical awareness needed to learn music faster and perform with precision.
This class takes place on Thursdays from 6:30 – 7:45 PM at the Hobby Center campus.
Music Theory Essentials II: 6th - 12th Grade
This continuation of Music Theory Essentials I pushes students further with intensified ear training, expanded sight-reading, and in-depth song form analysis.
This class takes place on Thursdays from 5 – 6:15 PM at the Hobby Center campus.
Building Vocal Technique: 6th - 8th Grade
This class brings vocal technique to life through real-time application, helping students strengthen their voices and step confidently onto the stage. From discovering your vocal range and making intentional performance choices to mastering the use of head and chest voice, students will gain the tools and control needed to perform with power, clarity, and confidence.
This class takes place on Tuesdays from 6:30 – 7:45 PM at the Hobby Center campus.
Building Vocal Technique: 9th - 12th Grade
This class brings vocal technique to life through real-time application, helping students strengthen their voices and step confidently onto the stage. From discovering your vocal range and making intentional performance choices to mastering the use of head and chest voice, students will gain the tools and control needed to perform with power, clarity, and confidence.
This class takes place on Tuesdays from 8 – 9:15 PM at the Hobby Center campus.

Whether you’re brand new to the stage or just beginning to hone your craft, this class will ignite your passion, build confidence, and empower you to sharpen your skills as you grow and thrive in the Academy.
This class takes place on Saturdays from 10:45 – 11:45 AM or 12 – 1 PM at the Hobby Center campus.

Character & Scene Study: 8th - 12th Grade
This course builds confidence and precision as performers bring scenes to life. Students will explore essential acting techniques—including subtext, emotional truth, and character relationships—while strengthening active listening, moment-to-moment responsiveness, and collaboration. Through focused script analysis and scene work, the class deepens performance skills using key concepts.
This class takes place on Tuesdays from 5 – 6:15 PM at the Hobby Center campus.
Monologues & Cold Readings: 8th - 12th Grade
This class focuses on monologue and cold reading preparation, guiding students in how to effectively cut, workshop, and fully explore monologues. Students will also develop strong cold reading audition skills, learning techniques to quickly analyze text, make bold choices, and deliver confident, compelling performances.
This class takes place on Tuesdays from 8 – 9:15 PM at the Hobby Center campus.
Dance Foundations for the Stage: 3rd - 8th Grade
This class builds essential skills for the musical theatre stage, focusing on alignment, coordination, rhythm, and musicality. Students will explore foundational styles such as jazz, ballet, and contemporary while learning key concepts like isolation, weight shift, and dynamics.

Ballet I: 6th - 12th Grade — YEAR-LONG CLASS
This introductory course builds a strong foundation in classical ballet technique. Students learn proper alignment, posture, basic vocabulary, and develop musicality and coordination through barre and center work. The class promotes body awareness, discipline, and confidence in a supportive learning environment.
This class takes place on Thursdays from 5 – 6:15 PM at the Hobby Center campus.
Tap I: 6th - 12th Grade — YEAR-LONG CLASS
This introductory course allows students to learn the basic techniques and rhythms of tap dance. Students will learn foundational tap vocabulary, timing, and coordination while developing musicality through simple combinations and exercises. The class encourages rhythm awareness, focus, and confidence in a fun and engaging environment.
This class takes place on Thursdays from 6:30 – 7:45 PM at the Hobby Center campus.
Jazz Dance for Musical Theatre: 6th - 12th Grade
Jazz Dance for Musical Theatre introduces students to the dynamic style of jazz as it is used in Broadway and stage productions. Students will learn foundational jazz technique, expressive performance skills, and musicality while exploring choreography inspired by musical theatre.
This class takes place on Wednesdays from 5 – 6:15 PM at the Hobby Center campus.
Technical Production & Design: 6th - 12th
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of technical theatre and production design, including set, lighting, sound, and costume design. Students will explore the design process, learn basic stagecraft skills, and gain hands-on experience with theatre technologies and equipment. Students in this class will also have the opportunity to support various Academy productions and TUTS events.
This class takes place on Wednesdays from 5 – 6:15 PM at the Hobby Center location.
Performance Troupe: 6th - 12th
Performance Troupe is the primary ensemble representing TUTS throughout the Greater Houston community in a series of thoughtfully selected performances. This inclusive group provides students with meaningful opportunities to showcase their performance skills while gaining visibility and experience. Emphasis is placed on collaboration, artistry, and fostering a supportive environment that celebrates a diverse cast of student performers of all abilities.
Participation in the Performance Troupe requires a commitment beyond regular class hours for performances. Performance schedules for the Performance Troupe will be shared in advance, allowing families adequate time to plan and adjust their schedules accordingly. While no audition is required to take part in the Performance Troupe, an audition will take place during the first class.

Create & Explore: PreK 4 - Kindergarten
Create & Explore is a joyful introduction to the world of musical theatre designed especially for Pre-K and Kindergarten students. Through imaginative play, singing, dancing, and storytelling, young performers build confidence, creativity, and early performance skills in an encouraging environment—giving your child a fun, engaging first step into the performing arts.
This class takes place on Saturdays from 10 – 11 AM at the Hobby Center campus.
Broadway Littles: 1st - 2nd Grade
Broadway Littles brings the magic of the stage to life for 1st and 2nd grade performers! Through upbeat songs, energetic dance, and creative storytelling, students are introduced to the foundational elements of musical theatre in a fun and inspiring environment. This high-energy class builds confidence, sparks imagination, and helps young stars shine as they grow their performance skills and love for the spotlight.
This class takes place on Saturdays from 11:15 AM to 12: 15 PM at the Hobby Center campus.
Mini Musical: 3rd - 5th Grade
Mini-Musical invites students to step into the spotlight as they perform their very own musical for family and friends, created specifically for this class! Throughout the class, students learn essential performance skills such as stage presence, blocking, and scene work while developing confidence in acting, singing, and movement. This collaborative and creative experience encourages teamwork, storytelling, and self-expression as students bring a full production to life on stage.
This class takes place on Saturdays from 12:45 – 2:15 PM at the Hobby Center campus.
